MITS is a bespoke platform that is used during Crisis Management Exercises or Crisis Communication Training, to allow users to react and respond to “live” media channels including the likes of BBC and Sky News as well as Social Media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
The software mimics the original media channels and how they would react should your organisation face a crisis. This clever tool is used to enhance the experience of a traditional tabletop or simulated exercise or communications training.
PlanB will provide a support team to facilitate the software during the exercise and they will control the simulator in real time.
MITS is a closed and secure tool.
MITS can post comments to Twitter, for example, on the scenario/crisis that is unfolding, creating rumours, trolling the organisation, and adding complexities and challenges for the team to consider. We will create hard hitting articles that will be published within the simulator mentioning the organisation by name, providing reviews, analysing and commenting on the response and probing for more detail. The greater the complexity of the exercise the more resource we can allocate to ensure that the session is interactive, dynamic challenging and eye opening.
Communicating during an incident or crisis is one of the most important decisions an organisation will take. It is often more important than their actions! Incidents that are played out across the media and social media result in organisations being judged in the court of public opinion. As most of the world has access to the media at their fingertips using smartphones, news travels faster than ever and organisations need to be prepared to respond promptly to avoid looking incompetent. Organisations need to be prepared to face the media meaning they also need to be prepared to engage with those on social media even if the organisation does not use social media or certain platforms. Social media gives critics, trolls, disgruntled customers and employees a voice which will be listened to.
MITS has been awarded the following accolades:
- Emergency Planning Society Award for ‘Most Innovative Product of the Year’ 2016 (Winner)
- Business Continuity Institute, European Awards as: ‘Continuity and Resilience Provider (Service/Product) of the Year 2016’ (Shortlisted)
- Business Continuity Institute, European Awards as ‘Continuity and Resilience Innovation of the Year 2015’. (Shortlisted)
TESTIMONIAL
“For many years, our Scenario Cell has carried out a decent job in inputting and reviewing media and communications challenges using telephone and email injects. However, using the MITS in a recent, large scale physical business continuity exercise added a significant degree of realism and engagement to the whole process. The visualisation of media injects coupled with real time and reactive updates really challenged the exercise participants to up their game. As the dust settles post-exercise, we are also finding huge added value from the system as we walk through and review the audit trail of communications captured during the exercise and really drive out the lessons learnt. In terms of cost-benefit, this is paying dividends, as we are able to identify, remediate and tangibly improve our response for the future”

Local Authority
PlanB Consulting provided remote support for an emergency planning exercise involving seven municipalities and townships in Ontario, Canada. The purpose of the exercise was to allow the various teams to practice crisis communications, with a specific focus on social media. To achieve this, PlanB Consulting’s Media Incident Training Simulator (MITS) was used, to simulate public social media posts during a flooding incident in the Ontario region. During the exercise, PlanB consulting controlled the system, posting pre-arranged updates on the MITS system for the participating teams to see. Participating teams were also able to react to updates by posting from their own simulated accounts.

MITS within Tabletop Exercise
PlanB Consulting recently designed and delivered a set of Business Continuity training exercises to a government security agency in London. These looked at four different scenarios, challenging teams to respond by drawing upon available resources to manage the incident effectively. In 2019 PlanB consulting ran a Tabletop Exercise for Gold and Silver teams of this organisation. This Tabletop included the use of MITS and focused on a long term loss of building scenario. The exercise was designed to assess the organisations latest plans and create awareness of these plans. The use of MITS gave them the opportunity to practice their media communications.

MITS Simulated Exercise – BACS
PlanB Consulting completed a programme of training and exercises for several key people within Bacs. More specifically a roll-out of incident management and then an exercise for Bacs’ senior management team. The training consisted of two half-days: the first of which looked at “Building an effective incident management infrastructure” and the second looked at “Practical incident management”.
The conclusion of the training was a half-day exercise looking at the organisation’s response to a Cyber incident which involved simulated media and social media through PlanB Consulting’s media simulator, MITS. Subsequently, PlanB delivered a half-day training session for the incident management teams administrative support team. Bacs manage the transfer of direct debits to and from banks, processing 106 million payments per day. PlanB Consulting’s work will improve the skills and experience of personnel as well as making recommendations for the improvement of the company’s BC arrangements.
